During this extraordinary event, the Councilor for Trade, Agriculture and Food, Hunting and Fishing, Parks of the Piedmont Region Paul Bongioanni proclaimed the Alta Langa DOCG “Wine of the Year Piedmont Region” 2025.
“A round of applause to President Castelletta and Director Rossino for their commitment and to all the producers for their visionary courage. – said Councilor Bongioanni -. Today, Alta Langa represents the success of a challenge that began in 1992 with the first experimental hectares, crowned by the DOCG in 2002 and in constant growth because it has focused on quality, which is what the markets ask of Piedmont. There are all the conditions to justify the just expectations of a further, great expansion for this extraordinary wine.”.
This is the comment of the president of the Alta Langa Consortium Maria Cristina Castelletta: “Alta Langa Docg is the oldest classic method in Italy, born in Piedmont in the mid-1800s. It is also the only Piedmontese denomination entirely dedicated to the classic method, the result of a long experimentation started in the 1990s. An ambitious path in which the Piedmont Region played a leading role, supporting the wineries producing bubbles and the first, bold winemakers who believed in this challenge. Piedmontese foresight and pride guided the creation of a classic method sparkling wine of the highest quality, capable of best expressing the extraordinary potential of a territory that extends across three provinces, Asti, Cuneo and Alessandria, towards which the Consortium feels a strong responsibility. Alta Langa Docg was not just a new wine: it was a vision, a project and, above all, a successful bet, which makes all of us Piedmontese proud. Today more than ever we can say it: Alta Langa Docg, Piedmontese pride”.
Excellent participation for the in-depth seminars that enriched the event. Great success for the conference that saw the director of the catering of Villa Crespi in dialogue*** Max Raugi, special guest at La Prima dell'Alta Langa, with the food journalist Luca Iaccarino: “I believe in Alta Langa – Raugi declared to an audience of 40 people, including restaurateurs and professional sommeliers –: there is a lot of potential for growth and it is a pleasure to have these wines on our list. Alta Langa DOCG has a unique specification, which is its main distinctive feature. It is a wine that has a lot to tell”.
Of great importance are the interventions of wine historians Pierstefano Berta and Giusi Mainardi on Origins and development of the oldest classic method in Italy and of the doctor of Natural Sciences and geology expert Edmondo Bonelli regarding the soils of Alta Langa, followed by an interested and participatory audience.
Partnerships with St. Bernard And Artimestieri ONLUS with the project “SAVE THE CAP!” have allowed during the event, respectively, the complete recovery of the “ELY” bottles in recycled 100% plastic and of all 1600 cork stoppers used by the producers, materials that will be entirely sent for recycling. Other partners of this edition were Raw Cuneo DOP, Roccaverano DOP, Warm Morning Bread And AIS Piedmont.
THE ALTA LANGA CONSORTIUM
The Alta Langa Consortium was born in 2001, after many years of research and in-depth, methodical and documented studies on the vocation of the area. It brings together passionate and far-sighted winemakers and producers who, driven by great Piedmontese pride, founded and grew this young denomination but with deep roots that sink into history and the territory. The great challenge that unites everyone is to produce a necessarily important wine, which will not be ready for six years after the vineyards are planted.
To date, the Consortium has 85 sparkling wine producers and 90 associated winemakers.
Since 2022 the president of the Consortium is Maria Cristina Castelletta, vice president is John Charles Bussi.
The Consortium boasts a long-standing partnership with the International Alba White Truffle Fair, of which it is the Main Sponsor and the Alta Langa DOCG Official Sparkling Wine, and with the world Slow Food, in particular with the Wine Bank and with theUniversity of Gastronomic Sciences of Pollenzo; The Consortium is also a technical partner of the Royal Theatre of Turin.
Alta Langa Docg has the honour of representing the first classic method in Italy, born in Piedmont in the mid-1800s..
The denomination obtained the DOC in 2002 and the maximum qualitative recognition of the DOCG in 2011, today it has a production of over three million bottles.
Alta Langa Docg is produced with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes, pure or mixed in varying percentages; it can be white or rosé, brut or pas dosé and has very long refinement times on the yeasts, as required by the strict regulations: at least 30 months.
A distinctive feature of Alta Langa is that it is an exclusively vintage sparkling wine, that is, the fruit of a single harvest: each bottle always bears the year of the grape harvest on the label, inextricably linked to the particular characteristics of that specific harvest. It is produced in a hilly area (over 250 meters above sea level) that encompasses the provinces of Asti, Cuneo and Alessandria: a land that looks at the snow-capped peaks of the Alps and breathes the sea and that collects the legacy preserved by its ancestors, kept intact for a long time without undergoing radical transformations, as instead happened in the lower hills. The Alta Langa is a precious territory, to be supported, in which biodiversity is safeguarded. A literary land, an extraordinary land of resistance - of wars and cultures -, which has faced changes and supported them without losing its baggage of memories and its strong identity.
